MIDI Control with iPhone and iPod Touch: i3L MIDI Bridge
Mobile, touch control of visual apps? We’ve seen one way to do it; here’s an even more compatible MIDI approach. I think I’d stick to the iPod Touch, personally, just to conserve battery on a phone. But it’s interesting. -PK
Hot on the heels of Mrmr, ArtificialEyes (the Istanbul-based VJ collective) have released i3L MIDI Bridge for the iPhone, which builds on Masayuki Akamatsu’s aka.remote.app, giving those without Max/MSP skills a simple way to bridge their iPhone and audio/video performance software of choice.
i3L (pronounced “i thrill”) is Freeware, and was developed using Max/MSP from Cycling74 and is a support application for aka.remote by Masayuki Akamatsu i3L receives pre-defined UDP messages from aka.remote.app running on the iPhone, scales the values to MIDI, and allows you to configure the sending MIDI channel and control change message number. While this software was developed to work seamlessly with our Real-time 3D VJ software Thrill, you can use this program with any audio or video software which receives midi messages.

I know this is for video, but it would be really bad ass if someone did something like this ala play live. I’m not a good programmer at all, so I’m always stuck waiting for others to come up with ideas.
I can probably set this up to control some stuff in ableton, just like the wiimote.

The NES emulator already supports this, so yes, it seems like it’s possible. Let’s just hope it will be documented in the SDK!

yeh gestures will have to follow… ive jailbroken my itouch the other day and been downloading native apps, an interesting app that i found is the Pedometer which measures the number of steps you take. just a matter of putting together some gesture recognition algorithms.
the itouch and iphone will make great controllers… blow the wiimote right outta water.

What would be fantastic is if someone used this AND the accerlometer to send messages to a host computer. Imagine more than one iPhone being used as controller…

Now I know that there is currently no support for the aka.remote app. But I amunable to launch the app on my touch. Firmware v 1.1.1 aka.remote v 2.1 intstalled using ifuntastic. When I launch aka it shows the start up screen with the 2droplets for apex 30 seconds. Has any one else experienced this? Any help would be great! Thanks
