You’re going to be seeing a lot more of these: Vixid matrix buttons.

The visualist world is in a real period of growth at the moment, and we think that Vixid are one of the companies who are doing great things to help this growth. From our first moments with a VJX we know that we wanted to spend more time and really get to know it. So we approached Vixid about partnering with CDM to create a site devoted to exploring the VJX16-4, and how it can help our art grow and develop.

How this partnership works: With a tool as deep and flexible as this, the traditional “couple of days or weeks” review loan wouldn’t really work. So Vixid have sent me a VJX16-4 to keep. This will allow me to spend time learning its tricks, trying it in different configurations in both live and studio settings, and to share what I’m learning.
In effect Vixid are paying for this content, but it’s not a “home shopping network advertorial” kind of situation. There will be no hand up the back of my shirt or sanitized autocue telling us what to say. We’ve built vixid.noisepages primarily because we love the mixer, and want it to become part of what we do. Getting paid for writing about it is an added bonus, for everyone really: Readers and users get new information and inspiration on what the VJX can do for their art, Vixid get a resource to help their existing users (or inspire new ones), and I get an amazing new toy to play with to spend some very serious and scholarly time doing educational research with a technologically sophisticated device.

I’m quite aware that some will consider this to be “selling out”. Peter and I have spent a lot of time discussing how we want CDM to progress, and we consider this kind of partnership to be an important part of building the visualist site of the future. We’re aiming to grow CDMo to a point where we can spend more time writing and creating, to document and to help this artform mature, and sponsorship from developers we think are pointed in the right direction is just one part of this plan.

So, rationale aside, what can you expect to see coming up on Vixid.noisepages? I’ll be going through some of the basics, like how to set up, and differences between “traditional” VJ mixers and the “Vixid way”, and more advanced stuff, like using MIDI to do crazy stuff with live inputs, and how to get the Vixid to operate as 2 virtual mixers outputting to separate screens. Oh, and I recently received 16 security cameras in the mail. The Vixid has 16 inputs… that should be interesting.

    The vixid mixer does indeed look pretty groovy – and I'm glad you guys will be devoting time and space to exploring everything you can do with it at the new microsite…

    Though, with all the new hardware that has come out in the past couple of years I'm still scratching my head at why a mixer like the vixid (especially at a $3,000+ price tag) doesn't seem to offer more interaction between audio and video – it seems there are 4 i/o's for video but only 1 for audio & with 4 layers of video plus tons of clips going at once the audiovisualist in me always wants to be able to mix audio that may be attached to clips or independant from them with at least as much ability a DJ mixer would afford.

    It would be fantastic to see some hardware come out that could really do a nice job of complex AV performances.

    Then again, I may have missed something about how the Vixid works…!?

    @Abdul: The audio-in on the Vixid is just for audio-controlled effects. It doesn't do any audio mixing at all, so that's the bit you've missed :)

    If you're looking for an A/V mixer, the Numark AVM02 is very good, and well priced even compared to the V4! However, as a DJ mixer it's very basic.

    If I was putting together my "dream" A/V setup it would be a Vixid controlled via midi, either from a DJ mixer with a reasonable level of midi customisation available, or from a 3rd part midi controller. The Vixid also sends midi out, so you could use the 4 tracks to control levels of 4 tracks in Ableton, 4 layers in VDMX, or 4 decks in Ableton…

    Well, for A/V mixing there's the Pioneer SVM-1000.

    It's "only" $5500.

    But, the reality is that video mixing is a different beast than audio mixing, and as a result any integrated mixer is likely to get gripes as well as praise – the inevitable design choices result in creative limitations. In other words, you end up with less flexibility to decide exactly how the audio and video should "fit together", creatively speaking.

    The DJ mixing paradigm is still the concept that holds the most sway, but it's not necessarily the most interesting or original way to perform A/V sets. Been there, done that, what's next?

    If you can deal with the configuration hassles, chaining audio and video devices via MIDI (or OSC) gives you a lot more freedom, and more bang for the buck as well.

    Eh bummer, looks like the interwebs ate my previous comment. Anyway, if you're curious about AV hardware mixing, take a look at the Pioneer SVM-1000 – it's a beast, with a $5500 price tag to match.

    Personally, I still prefer chaining audio and video devices with MIDI – more flexibility, and it allows you to work with all kinds of controllers (independent of the actual AV hardware) as well.

    Thanks for the heads-up Beatfix – you're right… seems also that a lot of the people getting into live video performance don't usually come from an audio production or DJ background; even still, the majority of DJs out there wouldn't have the patience to suss out software/hardware combos and crafting a visual aesthetic of their own, though of course this may change in time – especially with things like motion dive and the nuvj being out there very affordably.

    Your comment about syncing things w/MIDI seems totally the best way to be and I'm going to be playing a lot more with ableton in the next couple of months to see how I can achieve a new performance setup. Though, I really should get round to documenting my current setup which sees me doing a lot of ad-hoc audiovisual mixing with a midi controller for visuals, serato for DJing and then a combined audio channel coming through the DJ mixer with effects from the laptop controlling my video clips…
