Learning Video Mapping

by Jaymis Loveday

As mentioned in the call for artists, I have a project coming up which involves projection mapping in a venue which seems to have been designed with visuals in mind.

Doing research for this project I’ve discovered that there’s a dearth of resources for artists taking their first steps into projection mapping. The “traditional” technique is to follow the manual-labour route and make a mask in photoshop, or position planes in After Effects:

Video from Deepvisual

However, we’re hearing great things about VVVV’s new projection mapping techniques, and have seen so many great generative projection mapped projects in the past, it seems a pity to take the easy* way out.

So as the Game On project progresses, we will be putting together a CDM Projection Mapping guide, to get today’s visualists up to speed on this sexy yet mysterious technology. If you’d like to contribute to this project, or have a tool or technique which you think should be featured, get in touch (gameon@createdigitalmedia.net or contact form).

(*Note: “Easy way out” may turn out to be anything but easy.)

Thanks MJ. Some interesting looking stuff there. Not much information on how it's achieved though… Feel like sharing? :)

Crustea is the god of video mapping..

some great stuff there.. also, check this out:

thanks to diki (vvvv user) for his vvvv mapping tutorial you will find here: http://vvvv.org/tiki-index.php?page=How+To+Projec

@Darko: Yep, I've contacted Crustea about contributing some knowledge to our little quest.

@m9dfukc: That sounds great, but there's no actual technical information there. Looks like it will be a great resource when finished though.

Hi. I've been doing mapping the old fashioned way (with AE and Cinema4d) for a few years. More about my projects at my website and blog:

Hi. Some time ago a post was made about an automatic projector calibrator. I read the paper about it and built it very cheaply using an arduino, processing and QuartzComposer. Maybe implementing such thing will make instalation process much easier. Also if you add a camera conected to the computer you can do image substraction and find shapes much more easily (This is just a theoretical guess). I will make a video about how to build and implement the projector calibrator and post it. Let me know if this would be of any help or use.
    Good luck.

also interesting is the work from telematique and visomat.

here they are controlling 1200 videos live on a surface of an sculpture. http://www.telematique.de/shortcut/ifa-cubus-tele

    another installation is halbzeug. http://www.telematique.de/en/telematique-installa

    huh?
looks like you missed my earlier tutorial on basic mapping…

hmm, I've only made content for projection mapping, but I think the keystoning was done using a system called a Hippo. Might be wrong on this though as i can't google any info on the hippo.

  • mj

    @format.k
    that was the hippotiser http://www.green-hippo.com/

Addict Server and Salvation can handle extremely complex and precise mapping scenarios. Custom shaped screens, multiple projectors, keystoning – all mapping points editable in realtime with whatever video content you already have.

How about a two projector setup correctly mapping every individual brick on a wall? Check it out in London at the brand new club "Matter" (inside the O2)

    @deepvisual: thats a nice tut!

As a VDMX/QC user I was a bit gutted that this functionality didn't exist for us, so I put one together in QC. Demo at http://vimeo.com/2076022 with the source patches at http://vdmx.memo.tv/msa_quad_warp and http://vdmx.memo.tv/msa_quad_mask.
    Hope is useful!

  • blufo

wow that sounds great. looking forward to it!

@roymacdonald: I would be very interested in learning more about how you made the automatic calibration with arduino and processing + QC

  • RoyMacdonald

@hc gilje: I'm rebuilding de whole system with some improvements (this will be my second iteration) but as soon as I finish it I will post some videos + documentation.

Catalyst made by samsc does 32 layers of video playback and /or can handle 8 composite inputs or 2 dvi inputs (depending on hardware setup)
it has support for image blending betweeen projectors side by side and stacked for up to 6 projectors/ 6 outputs , each layer can be keystoned and / or sized , it has 16 submixes which can be mapped to anyhwere in its output space and can easily be manipulated with a mouse to control keystoning click and drag style or can correct for curved surfaces or can correct for projections onto spheres, more complex 3-d shapes can be accomodated with some extra work. I has a simple gui interface but is best controlled using a dmx lighting controller. It also has pixel mapping built in , allowing rgb led lighting fixtures to become pixels of a screen check out daft punk live for video of this. http://www.samsc-pm.com

I just put this together. It's a video mapped toaster. I think that no matter what technology you use, it's a good idea to practice as much as you can on small things… it really helps when you have to do bigger stuff.

First off…love the sexy accent…second this 3D video mapping ROCKS…would love to have a bash and use it on the front of my home…great visuals potential for sure

  • Ammar

I am new in Video Mapping, so I would like somone who is intersted on working with me on a project on video mapping. The project is in Algeria – Africa.
If you are intersted on working on the project please let me know. This will include Free Accomodation & Food & Return Flight.
LookForward to hear from you. Tel : 00447595262141.

    so where is the guide?

  • Golddust

Exactly – where is your guide? Thx for the 4V info though, that’s a bunch of programming language booshnofski that looks complicated.  Where’s the simple How to? ie what computer program is used to opperate the moving files, which media server, how do you get your exact surface size pertaining to your projections distance from the surface – i’m sure there is some math involved in both distance to surface and lens sizing . . . Not helpful Link . . . Not helpful at all
