If you think the BeagleBoard is too big, you can look at the Gumstix Overo. Considering the BeagleBoard takes under 2W and the Pico is under 10W, you could use a pretty small battery source.

FreeJ or Processing $free

I would love to for now have FreeJ or Processing on a running beagle board, dedicated system and out the box works a Korg Nano controller and/or multitouch to keep it simple.

Yo Fader, Nice work, here is a idea to check out. http://beagleboard.org/ http://dkc1.digikey.com/us/en/mkt/pico.html Together this cost $500 bucks from Digi-Key. If Digi-Key keeps this price this would allow us to build real time video effect synthesize, like Freej in a box with midi controller and touch control and real time video input. This turnkey system could allow us to build low costing real-time effect systems with HDMI out. Roland watch out the Video Boss effect system is coming.
