Quicktime 7.4 - Legacy Codecs -

Just a heads up. Apples latest Quicktime 7.4 update disables some ‘legacy’ codecs, specifically Sorenson and Sorenson 3. If you need to use these codecs, you must enable them within Quicktime Preferences, Advanced, Show Legacy Codecs. Cue “the more you know” music.

Quartz Composer Ultra-Newbie First Steps Tutorial -

i drank the kool-aid has posted a little guide which linked to Momo’s last QC tutorial, “Lighting 3D Cubes and Moving them with Audio Input“. Unleash Your Inner Creativity (and Programmer) with Quartz Composer is a very quick and simple overview which covers loading an image, scaling it and moving it around, but this is definitely enough to get you started and get the juices flowing with some more experimentation, so if you haven’t opened QC before because it looked too complex, now’s the time.

One of the reasons I decided against the Panasonic HVX-200 when choosing my HD camera was that there wasn’t OSX software to import P2 cards. This has now changed with Panasonic releasing P2 Contents Management Software for Mac.

A little late, and you probably already heard this via HD for Indies. You read HD4NDS, right?

HD4NDs’ Mike on Building Your Own HD Workstation -

Mike of HD for Indies fame has an article on DV.com on building a workstation (Mac or PC) for HD editing and post/correction.

Getting the right gear involves lots of decisions. I often spend an hour or two reviewing filmmakers’ or producers’ needs before we arrive at a system recommendation. Every shop and every project has its own peculiarities, so don’t take this list as gospel. It might be worth (ahem) consulting with someone whose advice you trust to fine-tune your needs, budgets, expectations, technical comfort level, and other factors. Myriad little extras and doodads make the system complete, but those are beyond the scope of this article. Suffice it to say you’ll spend a bit more than the following tallies by the time you’re done.

Seriously Beautiful New Midi Controller for Visualists: VMX VJ

I don’t know how I managed to miss the release of the CodaNova VMX VJ, but thanks to Grigori for bringing it to my attention:

Now this is more like it. The NuVJ is on the right track, but without having had a go my initial impression is that it doesn’t have quite enough controls and is too tied to the DJ-style layout. It may be perfect for Arkaos, the ReACT may be perfect for Resolume, but unfortunately I’m not buying my midi controllers to use in one single program.

The VMX VJ seems to be addressing these concerns: Plenty of trigger buttons, multiple jog wheels and cross faders (who decided that a single crossfader was enough for VJing?)

Has anyone managed to get their hands on one of them? A little steep at 500 euro, but the build quality looks great from those photos, if only the same thing could be said for the photos themselves. Perhaps the VMX guys could swing one my way in exchange for some extremely professional looking product shots.
